OpenAI’s ChatGPT experienced a global outage on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, the company confirmed in an official status update.
The website DownDetector, which tracks outages, showed an increase in complaints from ChatGPT users worldwide, with thousands of reports from different countries.
Many users reported that ChatGPT was not generating responses, a claim that OpenAI also admitted to.
OpenAI listed the 23 parts of its service that were affected. These included login, web, desktop and mobile (both iOS and Android), WhatsApp, search, file uploads and image generation.
However, other OpenAI products like the API, Sora, and Playground were not affected, according to the company’s update.
The company stated that it is looking into the main cause and is working to fix it.
“We are investigating the issue for the listed services. We have identified the root cause and are working to resolve it,” the statement said.
The outage has been reported across the world, including in India, where 85 percent of users reported a downtime. In the United States and the United Kingdom, thousands of users also reported problems with ChatGPT.
DownDetector reported issues with the chatbot on both its website and app.
It was not immediately clear whether the problem affected some users or all users.
The popular chatbot reportedly attracts around 700 million active users every week, offering assistance with a variety of issues.
Following the outage, a series of memes were shared on several social media platforms, highlighting the world’s growing reliance on AI.
This outage followed another one on June 10, when some users reportedreceiving different error messages when trying to use the service.
