Two Dead, Several Injured in Multi-Vehicle Nairobi-Mombasa Highway Crash

At least two people have died and three others have been injured following a horrific road accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway at Kwa Mautiiyo in Malili.
The accident occurred on Saturday, August 16, when a trailer rammed into an oncoming pick-up truck before crashing into another trailer travelling in the same direction.
Reports suggest that the pickup truck was attempting to overtake one of the trailers when it collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle.
According to David Kandie, the Athi River South Sub-County Police Commander, the accident occurred at around 7:30 am and killed the two victims instantly.
He noted that the victims included a driver from one of the trailers and a 25-year-old man who was seated at the back of the pick-up.
Meanwhile, the other three injured victims were rushed to the Machakos Level 5 hospital, where they are currently recuperating after receiving treatment.
Moments later, police officers arrived at the scene of the accident, cordoned off the area and towed the pick-up to the Kyumbi Police Station for further investigations.
During the incident, the area residents rushed to the scene and began siphoning the spilt fuel; however, the police, who were on high alert, quickly intervened and stopped the locals.
The latest incident adds to the number of road accidents that have taken place since the month began, including the death of 27 people who died recently at a road crash at the Coptic roundabout along the Kakamega-Kisumu highway.
Latest data from the National Transport and Safety Authority indicates thata total of 2,933 fatalities were reported between January and August 10 this year.
Meanwhile, Transport Cabinet SecretaryDavis Chirchir announced stringent measures to curb the surging casesof road accidents across the country.
Appearing before parliamentarians on Thursday, August 14, the CS announced the government’s intention to overhaul the vehicle inspection process as part of the measures to eradicate unroadworthy vehicles.
To further enhance road safety along major highways, the Transport CS announced plans to construct resting zones for long-distance truck drivers.
