Three Top Standard Group Leaders Resign

The Standard Group PLC has announced major changes to its Board of Directors, with the appointment of two new members and the resignation of three others.
In a notice dated September 8, the board stated that the changes were aimed at strengthening innovation, governance, and strategic growth in the media industry.
The notice comes just three months after stepping down of then Group CEO, Marion Gathoga-Mwangi, barely a year after she took over the group’s leadership on July 15, 2024.
Announcing herexit in June through a newsletterto the media house employees, Gathoga cited personal circumstances as the motivation for her exit and revealed that the transition process had already begun.
In the latest changes to the board, the company confirmed the appointment of Laila Denise Cherobon as a Non-Executive Director and Edward Mwasi as an Independent Non-Executive Director, effective immediately.
“The changes were made pursuant to the provisions of Regulation 10.1.1 of the Thirteenth Schedule of the Capital Markets (Public Offers, Listings and Disclosures) Regulations, 2023,” part of the statement read.
At the same time,the company announced the resignationof Albert Siegi, Christine Muthui, and Chris Otundo as Directors of the Company.
“The Board and Management take this opportunity to thank Mr. Siegi, Ms. Muthui and Mr. Otundo for their sustained and exemplary contribution to The Standard Group PLC and wish them the very best for the future,” the notice read.
Denise, who currently serves as Chief Strategy Officer at the Standard Group, also sits on the Advisory Board of the International News Media Association (INMA).
The board commended her for her “strategic guidance and contributions to advancing the organization’s growth and innovation agenda.”
She holds a Bachelor’s in Business Management from the University of Sunderland (UK), a Higher National Diploma with Distinction, and several certifications in project and strategic management. She is currently pursuing an Executive Master’s in Public Policy Management.
Also joining the board is Mwasi, a veteran in media strategy and institutional transformation. Mwasi currently works as a Media Strategy and Innovation Consultant at the Center for Business Innovation & Training (CBiT).
His career, which spans more than three decades,includes editorial leadership, graphic design, and governance reform. He previously served as CEO of the Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board and as Chief Graphic Designer at Nation Media Group.
“Mwasi has been instrumental in strengthening governance structures across Kenya, where he has trained Board and Commission Secretariats on applying technology to improve workplace efficiency, decision-making, and service delivery,” the notice stated.
