Three Men Jailed for Life Over Theft of Phone, Shoes
Three men have been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Ngong after they were found guilty of violent robbery in separate incidents.
The trio faced charges of robbery with violence, with the prosecutors presenting a watertight case against them that convinced the court to hand down the maximum penalty.
According to court records, the offenders violently robbed a man at Kibiku in Kajiado West on December 18, 2021.
During the incident, they made away with a Huawei Y9 phone valued at Ksh24,990, a memory card worth Ksh3,995, and a pair of shoes worth Ksh4,000.
Investigations further revealed that the suspects accessed the victim’s mobile money account and transferred Ksh3,970 to another mobile line.
Accordingly, the presiding magistrate ruled that the prosecution had proven allelements of robbery with violence beyond a reasonable doubt.
”Before fleeing, the attackers inflicted violence on their victim, leaving him injured. The court ruled that the Prosecution had proved all elements of robbery with violence beyond a reasonable doubt, sentencing the three men to life imprisonment,” read part of the ruling.
One of the convicts was at the same time separately charged with resisting arrest in Bulbul, Kajiado North, on December 29, 2021, where the court handed himanother two-year prison sentence for the offence.
Additionally, the court linked one of the three to a second robbery committed months earlier. According to court documents, on September 5, 2021, the man and his accomplices attacked a victim at Oloolua in Kajiado North, stealing items worth Ksh227,000.
Among the stolen property were a smart TV valued at Ksh95,000, a Honda concrete vibrator worth Ksh36,000, two mobile phones valued at Ksh44,000, and Ksh50,000 in cash.
The court also heard that they assaulted the victim physically before they fled the scene, leaving him with injuries.
For this second offence, the court imposed an additional life sentence, stressing the seriousness of repeated violent crimes that have been surging in the country, especially with the rise of organised criminal gangs.
