Police Recover 232 Guns in Ongoing Operations

The National Police Service Commission has revealed that 232 firearms and 1595 rounds of ammunition have been surrendered by residents so far in Kerio Valley.
According to a statement by NPS, on Friday, September 25, the recovery occurred during an ongoing exercise of surrendering firearms through the cooperation of community members and peace committees.
“The firearms were surrendered through the cooperation of community members and Peace Committees in the areas of Ketut, Chemwonyo, Kibaimwa, Mon, Chesuman, Kaben, and Endo,” part of the statement reads.
According to the police, the surrendered weapons were all acquired illegally by the local residents.
Police stated that on September 24, the communitysurrendered 27 illegal firearms, including AK-47 and G3 rifles,to the Tot Police station.
This came a few days after they also surrendered others on September 23, voluntarily surrendered 15 AK-47 rifles and 77 rounds of ammunition to police in Tot.
“The weapons have been taken into safe custody. This latest surrender brings the total number of firearms recovered under ‘Operation Rudisha Bunduki’ to 232, along with 1,595 rounds of ammunition,” police said.
NPS commended local leaders, elders, and residents for their goodwill and cooperation in fostering peace and security in the Kerio Valley.
Police, however, urged the public to continue supporting the amnesty by volunteering information and surrendering illegal arms.
Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Raymond Omollo, on September 18, stated that most of the guns are in the wrong hands, supporting the operations.
Omollo said that theoperations would help in safeguarding the security of locals.
“The government has taken many measures to ensure that there is security in Kerio Valley. That is why even locals are surrendering their weapons,” Omollo said.
The surrendered weapons will be taken for investigations and ballistic tests. Owners of the weapons claimed that they obtained them to fight against bandits in the area.
