NTSA Sends Important Update to School Transport Operators Ahead of Reopening

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced free motor vehicle inspection services for school transport vehicles as part of its ongoing“Watoto Wafike Salama”safety campaign.
In a notice issued on Wednesday, the Authority confirmed that school transport vehicles will benefit from free inspections at all NTSA centres. The exercise is scheduled for Saturday, August 23, 2025, between 9 am and 3 pm.
According to NTSA, the free inspections will allow school vehicle owners and institutions to have their vehicles assessed for safety and receive guidance on corrective measures to ensure the well-being of schoolchildren on the roads.
”We will make a safety assessment to guide motor vehicle owners and schools on corrective measures to take in order to ensure the safety of all our children. Present school transport vehicles for a free motor vehicle inspection clinic,” read part of the notice by NTSA.
The exercise will beconducted at inspection centres in Nairobi(Likoni Road), Mombasa, Nakuru, Machakos, Kakamega, Kisumu, Voi, Uasin Gishu, Nyahururu, Kitale, Nyeri, Thika, Embu, Meru, Kericho, and Garissa.
NTSA further clarified that in Kisii County, the free inspection clinic will be held a day earlier, on Friday, August 22, 2025. The event will take place at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, Kisii County.
The Authority encouraged all schools and vehicle owners to take advantage of the initiative, noting that preventive safety checks are a key measure in reducing road accidents involving school transport.
On Tuesday, NTSA urged all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) to ensure that their vehicles adhere to road safety standards as children head back to school.
In a public notice, the Authority issued a checklist that drivers and conductors of PSVs should follow to ensure that all vehicles carrying children are safe, well-maintained, and compliant with road safety laws.
Among the items on the list is ensuring that the vehicle is roadworthy and hasa valid inspection certificate, road service licence (RSL), and insurance.
The authority also advised drivers and conductors to ensure that all vehicle parts, including the brakes, tyres, lights, and wing mirrors, are in working order.
Additionally, NTSA has said that drivers should ensure that their vehicle’s speed governors are working and transmitting data to the authority’s Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS), to help monitor the vehicle speed in real time.
