Nairobi Police Announces Road Closures Ahead of Kenya Vs Madagascar Game
Nairobi motorists have been advised to brace for traffic disruptions on Friday, August 22 as the city prepares to hist the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) game between Kenya and Madagascar.
The game, which will take place at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, is set to bring temporary road closures and traffic diversion in several key roads.
In a notice issued in Nairobi Traffic Commandant Joseph Chirchir, motorists were made aware ofseveral traffic management measuresput in place to ensure seamless movement of teams, fans and emergency services.
Since the match is taking place at the Kasarani Stadium, Thika Road will inevitably be the most affected with the following disruptions and road closures announced by the traffic department.
Motorists traveling from the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD towards Ruiru, Juja or Thika via Thika Road have been advised to use Kiambu Road at Exit 4. A road block will be in place at Muthaiga to redirect traffic.
Vehicles using Thika Superhighway heading towards Mwiki should divert through Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki.
Motorists from Thika, Juja and Ruiru heading towards the CBD will have to use the Northern bypass or Kiambu Road since a roadblock will be in olace at the Ruiru interchange.
Those travelling from Githural en route to the Nairobi CBD have been advised to use Githural 44 through Kiambu Road.
For fans travelling to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani from Nairobi CBD without official vehicle access passes, they will have to use service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.
The National Police Service has also announced there would be additional officers deployed across the affected areas to assist with traffic management, with stern action expected to be imposed on any violators.
Notably, this is the first time since the CHAN 2024 began that a traffic disruption has been announced without affecting the roads surrounding the Nyayo Stadium.
This is because the Nyayo Stadium will not host any other CHAN matches following the last game involving Algeria and Niger on Monday, August 18.
Following the quarter-final, the next CHAN match to be held in the country will be the final on August 30,regardless of whether Kenya advances.
