KURA Issues Update on Construction of Two ‘Expressways’ Within CBD

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has confirmed that it is in the process of constructing two viaducts within Nairobi CBD, similar to expressways, to ensure seamless traffic flow across the city.
A viaduct is a long, elevated bridge-like structure designed to elevate traffic above a lower area. This is similar to parts of the Nairobi Expressway that are elevated parallel to Mombasa Road.
In a statement on Monday, August 11, Benjamin Asin, Assistant Director at the Authority’s Directorate of Urban Design, said that the first viaduct will run from the Integrity Centre to the land near the Serena Hotel along Valley Road, and the second one will run from the Milimani Law Courts to the land at the National Library area along Ngong Road.
According to Asin, the two viaducts will streamline traffic flow between the Nairobi CBD and the Upper Hill, which is one of the city’s busiest corridors.
The viaducts are part of the Valley Road–Kenyatta Ave/Ngong/Nyerere Interchange and the Upper Hill–Haile Selassie Overpass construction works, according to the authority.
According to Asin, the authority is also in the process of erecting expanded walkways and cycling tracks in the city between CBD and Upper Hill to ease human traffic within the corridor, in addition to installing streetlights to elevate the ambience of the routes.
“A viaduct is an elevated road over land, like what we have in an expressway. It integrates very well in an urban environment so that the visual intrusion is not interfered with. We were also expanding the walkways all the way from Valley Road to CBD,” Asin said.
The announcement comes at a time when the authority hasramped up efforts to rehabilitate key roads within the city.
According to KURA, it had commenced other major road works across the country’s capital, such as the rehabilitation of the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue route and Ngong Road.
In a statement on Saturday, July 3, the authority confirmed that it is constructing a four-lane flyover at the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road junction near Junction Mall.
According to KURA, the flyover, which is expected to be complete by July 2027,will include improved junctions, walkways, and cycling lanes.
“Construction of the Ngong Rd–Naivasha Rd (Junction Mall) Flyover is well underway! The project features a 4-lane flyover, improved junctions, walkways & cycling lanes, set to ease congestion and boost urban mobility. Completion is set for July 2027,” KURA said.
The authority further confirmed that it is also focusing on the completion of other stalled road projects across the country.
