KRA Flags Alleged Auction of 22 High-End Cars

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has warned the public against falling for a well-orchestrated vehicle auction advertisement that went viral on social media on Thursday August 21.
In an official statement, the KRA flagged the auction as fake and urged Kenyans to disregard it, recommending that the public rely solely on communications from the authority’s verified channels.
“Kindly note that the vehicle auction notices circulating are FAKE. All official KRA communication is shared only through verified official channels,” KRA said in the alert.
The fake auction, which was initially posted on Thursday, featured KRA colours and themes and claimed that 22 vehicles were up for sale.
A quick spot check byKenyans.co.keestablished that the fake auction mainly comprised high-end vehicle models such as a Range Rover Evoque, Audi Q6 Premium, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, and a Mercedes Benz GLE.
One of the biggest red flags from the auction, however, was the fact that the vehicles were being offered at prices that were significantly lower, even by auction standards.
In addition, the fake notice instructed buyers to make initial contact through a personal phone number, which was uncharacteristic of the taxman’s procedures.
The other suspicious aspect in the advertisement was that bidders were urged to pay a registration fee of Ksh20,000 to participate in the auction process.
The KRA further clarified that no form of auction is conducted by the authority through private contacts or personal payment requests.
As far as auctions are concerned, the KRA typically announces sale of vehicles and other goods through official gazette notices which are at times shared through the authority’s official portal and a reputable national newspaper.
Primarily, the auctions are meant to dispose unclaimed, abandoned or seized goods at ports and other entry points. In the auction advertisement, the authority lists items available, conditions of sale and auctions venue. Most of these elements were absent from the fake poster which was flagged on Thursday.
In addition, the KRA typically invites bidders to physically inspect the vehicles or goods in designated yards before auction day.
The bidding process is always open and competitive and isconducted either physically or through online platforms.
One of the most recent KRA auctions was announced in July 2025, when the taxman announced the online auction would run for five days between July 28 and August 1, 2025, through the KRA’s official portal.
