Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has claimed that the huge turnout of Kiambu residents at State House on Wednesday would not have any major impact on the political landscape of the region, as they had been paid.
Taking to social media after the event, Thang’wa even thanked the residents for presenting themselves at the event and earning the money.
Similarly, however, he claimed that their respective MPs had short-changed them by paying them Ksh6,000 instead of the budgeted Ksh10,000 for ferrying them to the Head of State’s residence.
He encouraged those affected to speak to their MPs about the additional Ksh4,000 they were reportedly owed.
“I thank the people of Kiambu who attended the State House visit today because, as we say, “Njogu ndithikaguo na miguongo” (a dead elephant is never buried with its tusks),” the Senator stated.
“In other words, we know very well we are not voting for Kasongo again, but we will still take his money and then kick him out at the ballot.”
During the recently declared Katiba Day, President William Ruto hosted hundreds of Kiambu grassroots leaders at the State House, where he promised several goodies, including a 10,000-seater stadium at Thika Town.
Additionally, Ruto relayed that he would be championing several development projects in the county, some of which had already kicked off.
For Ksh76.5 billion, the President pledged Ksh4.5 billion to building 30 modern markets in the county alone, in line with making his administration the most effective one in markets development.
An additional Ksh30 billion is being invested in the construction of at least 15,000 housing units in Kiambu County as part of the affordable housing project.
Ksh22 billion has been allocated to complete the 240-kilometre Mau Mau road network in the Kiambu area and to dualise the Muthaiga–Ndumberi road, and another Ksh20 billion has been allocated to complete the Northern Bypass.
During the visit, several leaders led by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Kikuyu MP Kimani backed calls to have Kiambu County be independent of the Mount Kenya region and be counted as a region by itself.
Since the impeachment of his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, President Ruto has been alienated by most of the Mount Kenya region, most of whom voted him in.
