The National Lands Commission has announced the reservation of a 5.916-hectare (approximately 14 acres) piece of land for the expansion of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Wote Township, Makueni County.
In a notice published in the Kenya Gazette issue of August 22, the Commission announced that once granted to the institution, the institution would assume all management and development on the land.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by sections 15, 16, 17, and 18 of the Land Act, 2012, the National Land Commission issues this reservation order to reserve and vest the care, control, and management of the land parcel L.R. No. 33890 containing 5.916 hectares or thereabouts, situated in Wote Township, Makueni County, as described in FR 714/85, to the Kenya Medical Training College, Makueni Wote Campus,” the notice read in part.
Although the campus shall henceforth manage the reserved land parcel, it shall be held and used under several special conditions, the most paramount being that the land shall only be used as a medical training college and ancillary services.
Secondly, the college is not allowed to part with the possession of the reserved land parcels without the written consent of the NLC.
Within 180 days of the announcement, the campus is expected to order the course to be prepared. It should also submit to the NLC for approval a plan for the development management and use of the reserved land parcels; failure to do so will result in the management orders being revoked.
It shall also pay any assessment payable to the county government as authorised in law, and also facilitate the harmonious coordination of services provided by other public agencies on the reserved land, ensuring optimal and efficient utilisation.
Lastly, the campus has been tasked with being responsible for safeguarding the land, making sure the demarcated boundaries of the land parcels are well-maintained.
The campus is among the 71 KMTC campuses across the country that produce about 85 per cent of the healthcare workforce in Kenya.
It is located in Wote, Makueni County,72km from Machakos City and 72 m away from Makindu town along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
It became operational in 2014 and is headed by Principal Gabriel K. Manyara.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the campus has just over 400 students, although the number is expected to increase with later intakes.
