Ex-Governor Arrested

Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati will spend the night in police cells ahead of his arraignment in court on Tuesday, September 2.
The former county boss presented himself at the Integrity Centre headquarters in Nairobi on Monday after a summons by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
EACC had initially revealed that it received consent from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to charge him alongside several of his associates.
The governor stands accused of embezzling public funds during his tenure as Busia County boss.
Besides Wangamati, the EACC on Friday, August 29, named more than 10 co-persons of interest linked to companies believed to have been used to siphon county funds.
“The above-named suspects are directed to present themselves at the EACC Headquarters, Integrity Centre, on Monday, 1st September 2025, at 8:00 am for processing and arraignment,” EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud said in the statement.
On Monday afternoon, Wangamati was taken to Kilimani Police Station, where he is expected to spend the night.
While speaking on his current woes in the Ksh70 million embezzlement case, the former governor, who ruled over Bungoma for one term between 2017 and 2022, claimed there was a political witch hunt against him.
He linked his arrest to 2027 Bungoma politics.
