Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was forced to cut short his tour of Tharaka Nithi County on Thursday, August 29, after rowdy youths stormed his event, sparking chaos.
The chaos ensued after the youths began chanting pro-government slogans in an attempt to intimidate the opposition leader. The rowdy group shouted ‘two term’, making it difficult for Kalonzo to address the rally.
Addressing the press moments after the incident, theWiper party leader accused President William Ruto’s administrationof allegedly hiring goons to disrupt his two-day meeting in the Mt Kenya region.
In particular, the opposition principal accused Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, whom he criticised for allegedly orchestrating the chaos witnessed at theKibung’a area.
According to Kalonzo, thedeputy president has grown intolerantto criticism and that his only option is to disrupt the opposition leaders’ meetings.
“I do not know who paid them, but this is a type of intolerance. We are a democracy, and people have every right. The only credit I give the people of Marimanti is that nobody threw stones,” Kalonzo said.
“The Deputy President should be setting an example by allowing people to come to his place freely, but if he is going to be the chief goon, how will he be received elsewhere?” he added.
While criticising Kindiki, Kalonzo noted that no amount of hooliganism orchestrated by the current administration would stop his intention to rally Kenyans against President Ruto.
“It’s been quite a day in Tharaka Nithi. Kindiki and his accomplices will not stop the one-term movement, which is not just a reality but the eventuality,” the Wiper leader noted.
Kalonzo’s sentiments were backed by Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, who, in a statement on Thursday evening, termed the chaotic disruption of the Wiper leader’s rally as ‘utterly unacceptable’.
Wavinya, while condemning the incident, called on Kenyans to remain united and to promote respect and tolerance in political discourse.
“The political intolerance that our party leader encountered today is utterly unacceptable. We must collectively condemn this behaviour as it leads down a perilous path,” she said.
“Let us stand united against such divisiveness and uphold the values of respect and tolerance in our political discourse,” Wavinya added.
