EACC Summons Governor, Business Associates

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has summoned Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok, former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati, and several business associates to its Nairobi headquarters for questioning over corruption allegations.
In a statement on Friday, August 29, 2025, the EACC announced it had received permission from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to charge the officials.
“Today, the EACC received consent from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to investigate allegations of conflicts of interest against the Governor of Bomet County and allegations of public fund embezzlement against the former Governor of Bungoma County,” the statement read.
The first case involves allegations of a conflict of interest against Governor Barchok and Evans Kipkoech Korir, a director at Chemasus Construction Limited.
The second case concerns the alleged embezzlement of public funds by former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati and his associates, who are linked to various construction and supply companies.
The associates named in the summon include Michael Simiyu Wangamati, Nicholas Wangamati, Edward Barasa Wangamati, Edward Maaya Makhanu, Sandra Soita Nasambu and Wafula Wakoli Chesititi.
Also mentioned are: Bramwel Mukwe Wafula, Juma Swaleh Juma, Jimmy Wekesa Barasa, Christopher Masika Makokha, and Joseph Wanyonyi Khaemba.
EACC Secretary and Chief Executive Officer Abdi A. Mohamud said the suspects are required to present themselves at the Integrity Centre on Monday, September 1, 2025, at 8am for processing and arraignment.
“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) hereby directs the above-named suspects to present themselves at the EACC headquarters at Intergriy Centres on September 1, 2025, at 8am for processing and arraignment,” the statement reads.
On August 28,DPP Renson Ingonga ordered the prosecution of Barchokby directing the EACC to further investigate files on Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and Marsabit Governor Mohammed Mahamud Ali regarding corruption claims.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) stated that Governor Barchok will be charged with a conflict of interest. He is accused of receiving Ksh2,750,000 from companies that did business with the county between the 2019/2020 and 2024/2025 financial years.
According to the DPP, Barchok and Korir should be charged with conflict of interest, money laundering, acquiring proceeds of crime, and the unlawful acquisition of public property.
The DPP has also charged former Bungoma Governor Wangamati and other county officials for allegedly stealing 70,205,882 through private companies.
In a separate case,Kiambu Governor Wamatangi and other county officialsare accused of unlawfully awarding a contract worth Ksh23 billion during the 2022/2023 financial year. The contract was for the supply, delivery, installation, testing, training, and support of an enterprise resource planning system.
