DCI Arrests Notorious Carjackers Behind Multiple Highway Robberies

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two suspects linked to a string of motor vehicle thefts along major roads in the country.
According to the DCI officers, the two are accused of orchestrating robberies targeting vehicles headed to Uganda as well as unregistered cars bearing Kenya Dealers (KD) plates.
The officers revealed that in one incident on August 28, 2025, the pair allegedly robbed a black Toyota Harrier with KD plates from a motorist in Makindu, Makueni County.
Following the incident, the DCI officers launched a manhunt for the suspects, and after weeks of search, the detectives released a statement on Saturday, September 27, confirming their arrest along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
During the arrest, theofficers recovered several items, including a set of registration plates, three Identity cards belonging to different people, five mobile phones, a wheel spanner, and other assorted items.
“The two are currently in custody as they undergo processing, awaiting their court appearance,” the DCI officers announced.
The arrest comes amid concerns over surging cases of vehicle theft in the country. Just 4 days ago, 8 police officers were arrested over links to a stolen Land Cruiser in Maseno, Kisumu County.
The 8 officers from Maseno police station were apprehended on Tuesday, September 23, and taken to the Kisumu central police station, where they were interrogated.
According to a police report, the 8 suspects are accused of stealing a Toyota Land Cruiser from the Maseno police station parking yard. The vehicle was later recovered while abandoned at the Maseno shopping centre.
Meanwhile, in June this year, theDCI sounded an alarm over a spike in motor vehicle theftin the country, with the detectives revealing new tactics criminals use to steal vehicles.
According to the officers, criminals have been using various methods to execute these thefts, including stealing vehicles from parking lots, exploiting car hire services, engaging in robbery with violence and carjacking.
The DCI said the worrying trend led to significant financial losses for vehicle owners and negatively affected the economy through a surge in insurance claims and non-performing loans.
