Hotel Found Serving Flamingo Meat to Unsuspecting Kenyans

The owner of a hotel in Bomet County has been apprehended after health officials discovered that he was unlawfully selling flamingo meat to unsuspecting customers.
The owner was apprehended during an impromptu operation led by Director of Public Health Leonard Lang’at from the Department of Health Services and County Public Health Officer Felix Langat.
During the raid, officers found freshly supplied flamingo meat stored at the hotel, some of which was already being cooked.
“The owner has been apprehended for allegedly selling flamingos following a sting operation conducted early today by county officials. County officers raided the premises and discovered freshly supplied flamingo meat, raising serious public health concerns,” County government of Bomet stated.
Chief Officer Langat warned other businesses engaging in the unlawful and unsafe supply of meat to cease their activities, and urged food businesses to ensure they have all the mandatory regulatory requirements.
He added that all food business owners or suppliers should have a Health Food Hygiene Licence.
“We are asking everyone who handles food, either storage, preparation, or sale, that you should have a Health Food Hygiene Licence,” he said.
The county had announced that it launched a crackdown on food vendors and hotels suspected of selling unlawful and contaminated food.
According to Langat, over 3500 cases of stomach pains have been reported in the county in the past months citing contaminated food.
He added that cancer cases in the county have been on the rise, linking it to some residents using unlawful chemicals when preparing local drink,mursik.
“People who are facing issues related to cancer, in Bomet are increasing and some of these are related directly to the food that they consume and that is why moving forward, we will ensure that everyone complies with our rules,”Langat said.
Langat urged the residents to exercise caution on where to eat and what to eat to avoid health issues.
Additionally, he warned any business owner, operator or supplier found going against health regulations that they will face legal action.
