Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has received a prestigious award for social justice and youth mentorship from the United Nations Centre in Bangkok, Thailand.
The award seeks to recognise people working to advance the Sustainable Development Goals, including the mentorship of youth-led projects and efforts to address emerging challenges.
Mwaura was recognised for his efforts in youth mentorship and social justice in the country and the wider region. The award also reflects his focus on offering climate-related solutions and ensuring the voices of young people are heard.
In a brief statement on Monday evening, Mwaura expressed gratitude and stressed his commitment to continue championing youth mentorship programmes.
“Glad to finally receive this prestigious award on social justice and youth mentorship from the United Nations Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. So very honoured for this great recognition. Glory be to God. I remain committed to the cause,” Mwaura wrote.
“Sometimes, the quietest battles shape the loudest legacies fought away from the spotlight, unseen by many, until the day the world pauses to recognise them,” he added.
Mwaura was appointed as the government spokesperson in October 2023.Prior, he served in the National Assembly and the Senate, where he was nominated to represent people with disability.
He transformed his personal struggle into a public mission, and in the chambers of parliament, he amplified voices long ignored. He adds to the number of Kenyans who have received the same award previously.
Among those who have initially received the award is Ezekiel Mutua, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB).
Mutua received the award in August last year during the UN World Humanitarian Day in Kathmandu, Nepal. He received the award as a recognition of his social impact and youth empowerment work.
According to the UN, Mutua was awarded for his dedication to promoting ethical leadership and transformative impact on the organisations and communities he has served, inspiring others to lead with integrity and purpose.
“May this award and all that it represents glorify God and may it give new impetus to our efforts to serve God and humanity and to promote clean content,” Mutua said upon receiving the award.
