Tuju Reveals Why He Quit Uhuru’s Jubilee Party

Former Jubilee Secretary-General Raphael Tuju has explained why he quit the party and whether he intends to run for political office in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview onNTVon Monday morning, Tuju said he left Jubilee for personal reasons, dismissing speculation that it was due to internal wrangles.
“I have left Jubilee for personal reasons. No hard feelings. I did leave Jubilee so that I am free to make my personal opinions without bearing or being asked whose behalf I am speaking on,” he stated.
He added that leaving the party has allowed him to express his views without being tied to a political organisation. “Now I can talk on behalf of myself. Essentially, it is stepping on a free space like I am doing here,” Tuju remarked.
On whether he was considering running for the Siaya gubernatorial seat in 2027,Tuju said he was not interested.
“On whether I am considering running for a political office, that is not something that I am considering right now, as I have private companies to run. At the moment, over 100 families directly depend on me, so any decision is going to have an impact on their lives, so I have to be careful.”
Tuju noted that the challenges facing the country were structural rather than political, insisting that running for governor would not necessarily solve them.
“The problem that the country is facing today is more structural than political; therefore, I do not think I would be of any use in Siaya more than the current governor, if the issues are not addressed,” he explained.
He further pointed out thatany decision to return to politics would have to involve his family. “Additionally, that would be a personal and family decision to make should such a decision arise. Therefore, it has to get the concurrence of my family,” he said.
Tuju formally resigned from the Jubilee Party, led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, on Tuesday last week.
In a resignation letter addressed to the former president, dated Tuesday, August 19, Tuju stated that, given the rapidly evolving political ecosystem both in the country and within the Jubilee Party, he saw no further value he could add to the outfit.
Acknowledging the political journey he has traversed over the years, especially with the former president, Tuju affirmed that despite his resignation, he would remain loyal to him and was willing to collaborate with him in future political ventures.
