A huge fire burned down part of the Khoja Flats near the Sakina Mosque in Mombasa on Friday night, 22 August 2025.
Footage obtained byKenyans.co.keshowed thick smoke billowing from the offices on the top floor of the building, which is located opposite the mosque.
According to witness reports, the Mombasa fire brigade responded promptly to the emergency.
Fire engines were deployed to the scene shortly after the fire broke out and the firefighters worked to extinguish the flames before they could spread to neighbouring buildings.
Despite the efforts made, smoke could still be seen billowing from the building long after the fire started.
Residents stood by, watching in fear as their destroyed properties burned.
The authorities have not yet established the exact cause of the fire, but an investigation is expected to determine what sparked the inferno.
There have been no reports of fatalities or injuries from the incident.
This incident comes just days after another majorfire destroyed property worth millions at Gikomba Market in Nairobi.
The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, August 19, left traders counting losses after stalls and goods were reduced to ashes.
The back-to-back fire tragedies have raised fresh concerns over fire preparedness and safety standards in Kenya’s urban centres.
Many residents have urged county governments to invest in more fire stations, modern equipment, and rapid response teams. Authorities have promised a full investigation into both incidents, with assurances that measures will be put in place to prevent future tragedies.
