KURA Announces Crackdown Along Eastern Bypass

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced plans to take down signboards and illegal installations along the Eastern Bypass Corridor.
In a statement, the authority noted that several unauthorised billboards, many of which have been erected without approval.
According to the agency, the structures not only compromised the aesthetic value of the urban landscape but also posed a significant danger to motorists and pedestrians.
“It has come to our attention that the Eastern Bypass Corridor has been extensively occupied with signboards, many of which pose safety risks to road users and compromise the urban aesthetics of the area,” the statement reads. “A significant number of these installations have been erected illegally on public land.”
In response to the emerging billboards, KURA announced a clean-up exercise targeting all hazardous structures, including billboards along the bypass, to restore proper use of road reserves.
“The Kenya Urban Roads Authority will be undertaking a clean-up exercise to restore order along the corridor,” the statement went on.
Ahead of the crackdown, KURA called for a stakeholders meeting on Thursday, September 18, at 10am to ensure a coordinated approach to the crackdown.
The meeting is set to bring together Nairobi and Kiambu County Commissioners, Deputy County Commissioners, area chiefs, traders and business owners operating along the corridor.
The Eastern Bypass is a vital transport link connecting key suburbs between Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
In recent years, the expansion of the road into a dual carriageway inevitably led to increased commercialisation, with businesses setting up billboards, kiosks and other structures along the busy road.
Besides billboards, there has also been a rapid rise of kiosks and other structures along the Eastern bypass, some of which have encroached on public space.
Expansion of the bypass, which began in 2021, significantly eased traffic congestion along the 28-kilometre bypass, although it remains one of the most dangerous roads in Nairobi, like the Thika Superhighway, Waiyaki Way, Outering Road and Northern Bypass.
