KFS Introduces Drone Patrols at Karura Forest
The Kenya Forest Service has announced the introduction of drone patrols in Karura Forest totighten security operationsjust days after a python was reportedly spotted in the forest.
While inviting Kenyans to enjoy the urban green space, the service relayed that the drones will be conducting regular patrols in the forest and will work alongside existing measures to keep the forest safe.
“The drone unit from the Security and Protection Directorate now conducts regular aerial patrols throughout the forest,” the statement read in part.
“This new security system provides better monitoring of the forest area, giving visitors confidence as they walk, cycle, and picnic. The drone patrols work alongside existing ground security measures, showing KFS’s commitment to keeping Karura Forest safe and accessible for all Nairobi residents and visitors.”
The update comes amid concerns of insecurity in the forest amid analleged takeover by the KFS from the Community Forest Association (CFA).
Just over a week ago, sightings of a python prowling the forest paths were reported, prompting KFS to take action.
In a statement on September 5, the service issued security guidelines, acknowledged receiving reports of the python in the forest, and advised Kenyans to report similar sightings immediately and keep their pets on a leash.
However, it noted that the image being circulated online had yet to be authenticated, although it noted there had been similar sightings in the previous years of2019 and 2022.
“In case of any sighting, the matter should be reported immediately to KFS Forest Rangers located at the various gates,” the Forest Service told Kenyans.
“In addition, visitors with pets are advised to consider keeping them on a leash along the designated tracks only,” the agency added.
It further urged the forest visitors to walk or jog along designated paths and tracks only asa precautionary measure.
While calling for caution among Karura forest visitors, KFS promised to collaborate with relevant government agencies to explore potential solutions to the matter.
