Two people lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries after a multi-vehicle accident along the Mwea-Embu Highway on Sunday, September 14.
The early morning accident saw a Toyota Probox collide head-on with a boda boda, killing the rider on the spot.
According to witness accounts, the Probox was being driven at dangerous speeds and appeared to be competing with another one to arrive in Nairobi at the earliest possible time.
With both vehicles taking up both lanes of the road, one of the vehicles collided with a boda boda rider, who was also coming from the opposite direction.
Images and videos of the incident showed the extent of damage at the scene, as the highway was littered with car parts, suggesting the impact was extensive.
The Probox was also badly damaged on the driver’s side, indicating the driver’s chances of survival were minimal.
“There were two vehicles ferrying Miraa. They were moving very fast. In the process, a boda boda rider was hit, and the driver also lost his life,” said one witness at the scene.
Another witness confirmed the vehicles were racing for miraa markets in Nairobi.
“They were speeding and overtaking recklessly. One of the cars met a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction as it overtook a tuk-tuk. There was no space. The car collided head-on with the boda boda rider, who died on the spot,” the witness said.
Area residents also flagged the location as a black spot, calling on authorities to either expand the road or install speed bumps, citing rampant speeding as a growing concern in the area.
This was the second road accident in less than 24 hours, following an incident on Saturday afternoon in which several people were injured when a bus ferryingGor Mahia Football Club fanswas involved in a crash at Kimende along the Nairobi–Naivasha highway.
Reports indicate that the crash occurred after the bus, which was apparently speeding, lost control, veered off the highway and overturned beside the road.
