Ruto Slams RSF and Sudan Army, Warns of Looming Crisis

President William Ruto has slammed the warring parties in Sudan for allegedly putting their interests above the needs of the Sudanese people, following the ongoing war in the country.
Speaking on Friday, September 12,moments after meeting thePersonal Envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations,Ramtane Lamamra,at State House in Nairobi, the Head of State warned that a military was not the solution to the escalating war.
Theconflict involves the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group that has continuously threatened to take over the country.
Ruto called on the warring parties to engage in a meaningful dialogue for sustained peace in the region that has been marred by conflict in recent years.
Ruto urged the warring parties toprioritise the needs of the Sudanese people above their personal interests, warning that war risked escalating the humanitarian crisis in the country.
The President also reiterated his administration’s commitment to support efforts to tame the tragic humanitarian disaster afflicting the people of Sudan.
During the meeting, the Lamamra briefed Ruto on the efforts of the United Nations aimed at securing humanitarian access, de-escalating the war and supporting a process that leads to civilian administration in the Sudan.
“I had the privilege to meet President Ruto. I shared with him my vision on intensifying peace efforts in Sudan, building on the positive exchanges I had in Nairobi, where various stakeholders encouraged me to persevere in my endeavour to engage the parties towards a lasting solution,” said Ambassador Lamamra.
“President Ruto offered his view of the evolving situation in Sudan, expressing his full support to the efforts of the Secretary-General and my own,” the UN envoy added.
The two leaders also discussed the UN’s plans to end the escalating war in Somalia and the entire Horn of Africa, particularly defeating the Al Shabaab militants.
It is not the first time the Head of State has expressed concerns over the Sudan war. In February this year, Ruto called on external parties fuelling the Sudan war to refrain from their activities.
Addressing delegates during a high-level humanitarian conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in February this year, the President noted that the war in Sudan could only be brought to an end through a collective effort and decisive action.
Ruto went ahead to call on the international organisations and other governments to help in providing a lasting solution to the ongoing war.
