Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale was caught on camera confronting the contractor of the Ziwa Level Five Hospital for continued absences on Wednesday, September 10.
While conducting inspections at hospitals in Uasin Gishu County, Duale arrived at the construction site, accompanied by Governor Jonathan Bii, and sought answers from the contractor on why the construction, which started in 2015, had halted despite being paid by the government.
“You were paid in June, but you have not been here since January? Why are you eating our money?” Duale quipped.
“I have been told this project has taken too long. This is a facility that our mothers and our people should have used by now.”
Under fire, the frazzled contractor assured the CS and the governor that plans were underway to ensure that the construction resumed by September 22.
As such, Duale promised that he would visit the site on that date to ensure he kept his word; failure to do so would result in serious consequences.
“On the 22nd, I am coming here and we want to see people working here,” Duale declared, urging the County Commissioner to see to it that the construction starts by then.
During the Uasing Gishu tour, the CS led Ministry officials on several tours to hospitals in the region, including the 2000-bed capacity Moit Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).
Speaking in Eldoret, he pledged a further Ksh100 million to revive the healthcare system in the county, citing specifically the completion of the Ziwa Hospital.
“The national government has committed to releasing Ksh100 million this month, on top of the Ksh100 million already allocated by the Uasin Gishu County Government. This will ensure that Ziwa Hospital is revived as part of our efforts to guarantee access to affordable healthcare for all Kenyans,” said Duale.
“I am aware that many Cabinet Secretaries have visited here before and made promises. But I am not cut from the same cloth. From now on, this facility must be completed. The contractor has instructions to report to the site by September 22 and begin work—there will be no excuses.”
The facility is being upgraded to a Level 5 facility at a cost of Ksh800 million.
